sometimes the highlight of my day is singing a church hymn in french.
i couldn't tell you why i love french so much. i just do. i love everything about it. the way it sounds. the way it feels in my mouth right before it becomes words. the way it feels as words in my mouth. sometimes when i speak it, i feel like i'm hearing someone else talk [those moments are magical].
one day a couple of weeks ago, life was a little rocky. i was on the up-end of a really difficult point in time, but i was still bruised. still a little down.
we sang a hymn in french. it's a hymn that i'm almost positive we don't have in english.
there wasn't any music that would accompany us on the church's website, so we sang a cappella.
the entire class sight read this music.
Souviens-toi, mon enfant:
Tes parents divins
Te serraient dans leurs bras
ce temps n'est pas loin.
Remember you, my child:
your heavenly parents
hold you in their arms,
the time is not far off.
(excuse my imperfect translation)
lovely, n'est-ce pas?

away
i love thursdays. i've probably said it before, but i'll say it again.
this particular thursday has been lovely. a 154 in my bowling class. brilliantly red leaves calling out to me amongst mud and brown. they make me wish i had a digital camera. some art.
currently, i'm in art history. why am i blogging?
who knows.
i got a 98% on my last test (and then began to think there must have been a mistake because that's such a surprising score) and decided my brain was going to give up on listening. it's just too difficult. and i'm just too tired. excuses? why yes. yes they are.
my french was tired this morning, too. my inability to comprehend what was going on was like when you have a rock in your shoe. something's terribly wrong, but it's so small it's mostly just an irritant. that's how i felt about french today. and i got told off for speaking in english.
i couldn't help it that the soiree chanson was boring last night and that sophie started talking about it en anglais.
then i realized the professor had stopped speaking and was looking at me (scary).
"vous etes fini, maintenant?"
sheepish. "oui. je suis desolee." (a term i'm familiar with)
he then said something about me being sorry. it was probably a threat. like, "yeah, you will be sorry." or something like that.
disclaimer: i realize my accent marks aren't there. i can't figure out how to post them without having major errors.

new name
comme d'habitude.
it means, "as usual." (in french, which really is as usual with me).
a beautiful way to describe something perhaps mundane.
sort of what i'm trying to accomplish with my blog.

colloquial
here i sit, fully prepared to write a misunderstood artist's post about how life yesterday was one of those days where french was literally swimming through the cavities of my mind in un-understandable patterns and even english began to look foreign and keane wasn't speaking my vernacular comme d'habitude and breeding colors in my design class was making my eyes fatigued and i just wanted to stop in the middle of the paved stones on campus next to the library and melt into some kind of oblivion because i didn't want to keep going with the lack of fluency in all languages of my life.
then i started listening to this song. and all of the influent flutterings in my mind took a sick day.

homework neverending
et maintenant, je vais commencer par les choses importants.
*whispers* and now, i'm going to start with the big stuff.
wish me luck
SIDE NOTE: and happy birthday to the church! 180-years-old today.
