the profound thoughts from hiking

she brought to my attention yesterday this fact: "we always assume that the people we love know that we love them. but they don't."

which lead me to this talk, and this quote:

"Stresses in our lives come regardless of our circumstances. We must deal with them the best we can. But we should not let them get in the way of what is most important—and what is most important almost always involves the people around us. Often we assume that they must know how much we love them. But we should never assume; we should let them know. Wrote William Shakespeare, “They do not love that do not show their love.” We will never regret the kind words spoken or the affection shown. Rather, our regrets will come if such things are omitted from our relationships with those who mean the most to us."
-president thomas s. monson

it was a revolutionary thought for me.
it lead to a quick self-assessment of people i really love. and the people i didn't know i loved. and the people that i care about deeply, but it's a different kind of love.

most of them know it.
family,my missionary friends

but some of them don't.
let's not name names here.

and now i'm stuck with the conundrum of what to do about the ones who don't.
what to do, what to do.
