Nostalgia

I am a nostalgic person. I believe it's one of my worst vices, because it leads to a small hoarding issue as well as unnecessary sad feelings at times.

But sometimes I have these wonderfully sweet moments with Nostalgia. She was sitting in the front seat of my car yesterday as I drove to the wedding of two people I have known for over a decade. As I was reminiscing with Nostalgia, she took me past a place where, years ago, I met a boy. A boy that for a long time I thought was THE boy. He had a torch in my proverbial Survivor tribal council that held out through all the tribal councils of a lot of other boys. There were many beautiful elements to the story of this boy, but the most beautiful element of it was when he was finally and forever voted off the island. Because as soon as that torch was out, I met the the reason for all of the madness.

Parker.

And then the planets aligned and all those shards of girly, Taylor Swift-y moments came together to form a happy ending/beginning.

The end/beginning of life as I knew it.

king james

I was reading in the Ensign yesterday about the King James Version of the Bible. It was comparing the King James Version with the New International Reader's Version of the Bible. It compared the same section from 1 Corinthians 13: where Paul talked about charity.

The King James Version is apparently known for its poetic nature, and after seeing the version of the Bible I'm so familiar with next to the New International Version, I was so grateful for the language.

“Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing”
1 Corinthians 13:1-3

So, thank you King James. Thank you Lancelot Andrewes, William Barlow, Edward Lively, John Duport, John Hardin, Thomas Ravis. Thanks for giving us syntax in scripture that resonates with the soul.

[un]luck.

the harris fine arts center (hereafter referenced to as the hfac) is a large building.

there are five floors, various hidden practice rooms, printing labs, galleries, offices, studios, lounges, classrooms, performance halls, recital halls. the list goes on. a lot of the building is underground with no windows and too many whitewashed walls.

sometimes it's magical. you'll be close enough to touch the head of c.f. payne in a classroom with artists lining the walls and sitting on desks while a heavenly chorus sings from the gallery downstairs. (the gallery is big. echoing is inevitable.)

and sometimes it's even more magical. because you'll be sitting in a class that you're [not] underqualified for [but you won't realize that until much, much later], waiting for the professor to walk in and sign your add/drop card because you want to be an artist so bad it hurts. you'll be early to the class and the only one there amongst tables curiously stained with charcoal or paint. then someone with red hair will walk in with a big black portfolio. she'll tell you she's trying to add the class too. you'll see her artwork and still feel underqualified, but you'll feel better because she is there on the same terms that you are.

and then (the most magical thing) one day you'll be completely away from the hfac, sitting on your twenty-three-year-old teal couch on a saturday morning wearing flannel when someone knocks on the door. you open it and realize it's another group of freshmen looking at your apartment. but you'll recognize the red hair and know that there was no way she accidentally knocked on the door.

proof that heavenly father cares about you. (about me.)
proof that he knows what's going to happen in your life,
and what you can and can't handle without a lucky red-headed roommate.

the red hair looks especially festive when it's st. patrick's day.

rays of sun

there are times when people talk to you and you just swallow every word. or gulp it. thirst after it as though you'd just run 39.5 minutes in 90 degree weather and you want water. you wish your mind could record things word for word like an old school vcr so you could go home and relive

everything said. everything implied. everything felt.

i wished that today. everything that was said and talked about i wanted to put in my pocket and keep it for the rest of my life and into the eternities.

rock and roll

my dad thinks that whenever he gets a call from me, it's either because my car is broken or my computer. which is usually the case. my dad's really good at that stuff. fixing things. he fixes things when they seem to be un-fixable.

like perspective. when my life is un-fixable, and i'm walking in the shambles of what i thought was reality, my dad lifts me up. i see the view of my life from up in an airplane; when little things that seemed to matter are small in comparison to the big landscape.

and when i was mad at the missionary, i came home and he gave me a big hug. ready to fight my battle.

thanks dad. i know life's not being fair right now, but i love you. despite everything.
